Research Instruments

There are a number of existing research instruments that are available for collecting data directly from research participants. These instruments focus on issues such as classroom instruction, school climate, teacher professionalism, and leadership support among others. For example, if you were interested in studying the climate in your elementary school, you could obtain an existing research instrument that examines school climate. One such example, the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire (OCDQ-RE), developed by Dr. Wayne Hoy, could be used to study various behaviors in schools that are associated with a healthy school climate. The instrument captures information from participants about their relationships with colleagues and support from administrators. As shown in Figure 7.1, the questionnaire is fully developed and thus easily used in a research study that you might undertake. Indeed, for the novice researcher, these instruments often serve as an excellent starting point for the development of a quantitative study.
